I took Southwest flight this afternoon to Austin to see my 2 months old niece and my brother and sister-in-law. This is the second time I fly the Southwest. I can tell the difference of Southwest the minute I boarded the airplane. As usually there are no assigned seat. When the plane was ready to take off, the flight attendent started to make some interesting jokes (although I had to admit I only understand a third of them). This reminded me last time when I took Southwest, before the plane landing, a flight attendant sung a song for us. The atmosphere is relaxed during the flight. One again before landing, the pilot announced there is a little girl who is celebrate her birthday today. So we also sung the "Happy Birthday to you". When the plane reached the gate, the bye bye word is "get your stuff and get out". Now I'm eager to wait what will happen on my way back.
On serious side, I know the Southwest stock LUV appreciated many times since its IPO in 80s. As a matter of fact, if you read
The future for the investors, LUV is one of the best performers in S&P in past 20 years.
This made me thinking: I have taken other big airlines in the US during my 8 years' stay in the States. From customer point of view, I think their service is generally OK. But there is difference: crews' the passion and the personality. I don't think they are different people. It's the different management and culture make all the difference.
